One of the biggest goals of psychotherapy is helping clients anticipate challenges to sobriety and respond in empowering ways. CBT looks at the thought patterns behind addiction, while DBT looks at the psychosocial dynamics surrounding it. Both approaches help clients prepare for times when life gets tough and the temptation to drink grows.

For the investigation, the research team recruited men and women who were diagnosed with alcohol dependence based on standard definitions and consumed on average seven drinks on days when they drank. Forty-eight patients received at least 1 dose and up to 3 doses of psilocybin, and 45 patients received the antihistamine placebo. Two doses of psilocybin, a compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, reduces heavy drinking by 83 percent on average among heavy drinkers when combined with psychotherapy, a new study shows. Once people begin drinking excessively, the problem can perpetuate itself.

A number of these therapies, including cognitive-behavioral coping skills treatment and motivational enhancement therapy, were developed by psychologists. All patients were assessed independently by the second author and a psychologist to confirm the diagnosis of AUD and evaluate inclusion and exclusion criteria. After agreement between assessors and informed consent were obtained, an initial and complete assessment was administered. Four participants were excluded from the study because of presence of Borderline Personality Disorder (2 participants) and lack of a primary diagnosis of AUD (2 participants).

There are many forms of psychotherapy that a therapist might use to help clients in alcohol addiction recovery. Two of the most commonly used types include cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy. Just as some people with diabetes or asthma may have flare-ups of their disease, a relapse to drinking can be seen as a temporary setback to full recovery and not a complete failure. Seeking professional help can prevent relapse—behavioral therapies can help people develop skills to avoid and overcome triggers, such as stress, that might lead to drinking.

The weekly measure of metacognitive beliefs did not change during baseline and showed a substantial reduction during treatment (see Figure 1).

  • For example, cross-sectional research using self-report instruments has demonstrated that metacognitive beliefs are elevated in problem drinking (Spada and Wells, 2009).
  • For many, continued follow up with a treatment provider is critical to overcoming problem drinking.

People with alcohol use disorders drink to excess, endangering both themselves and others. Plus, there are outpatient, day programs, and sober living options for those transitioning out of inpatient. We can treat people with different needs, not just those with alcoholism.
